Meet my Audience!

Data presentation :-)

  • From my research I found that people do watch British Social Realism films alot because they reflect controversial issues. Most people are initially interested towards this genre if there is an issue not particularly shown enough. For example, one person mentioned they re-watched 'Bend it like Beckham' a few times because the protagonist was an Asian girl playing football which is not commonly represented.

  • I asked peoples views on Sexual Harassment so I could use realist views in my production , rather than just mainstream or minority views. Some people found that women are often sexually harassed because of their choice of provocative clothing, however some (i.e second participant) thought that this idea was unfair.

  • One of my participants of the vox pops stated that it depends on where you live, this gives the impression that the public expect sexual harassment only occurs in certain places, which is why it will be interesting when I display how even the most unlikely circumstances can have sexual harassment which I am looking forward to sharing in my production.

  • Another finding that came to light was the fact that sexual harassment also happens in relationships as well as just in the workplace, to broaden my narrative further I will showcase both in my production.

  • The public also found that the reason sexual harassment is not as recognized as other controversial topics is because people play on the stereotypes. The male is always seen as the aggressor and the female as the victim, although I want to showcase the archetype of the downtrodden woman, I want to illustrate how this can be reversed to a male also.My protagonist will play the part of the downtrodden woman as some of her fellow male colleagues will have the same archetype but as the male reverse.I will also include a lost boy who will be one of her friends and the bully will be her boss.

What decisions did you make about the content of your BSR treatment? What did you learn from your primary research? How did  it influence your planning?

-This week we finalized the locations we will be filming at.We emailed locations in Canary Wharf and City Hall who have given us permission to film around the perimeter.I am still inquiring head offices if we are allowed to film inside any office environments.

-From my primary research I learnt how Sexual Harassment is a strong taboo subject because it is hardly represented in any films. This theme will easily work with my BSR genre because it connotes a daily struggle within our soceity. My findings this week also helped me learn about the gender roles within sexual harassment and how men are equally effected as women.
-This week I also learnt more about vox pops.
For video and television vox pops, the interviewer approaches people "in the street" and asks them simple questions about the topic. These people will be new to interviews and will often be nervous, flustered, giggly, etc. It's therefore important to make them feel comfortable and relaxed.
When asking people to participate, fast is best - don't give them time to worry about how they look or what their friends will think. Use a short, sharp standard question such as "Would you mind answering a couple of quick questions about genetically modified food for TV3 news tonight?". (Note: Everyone will want to know what channel you're with and when the programme will be broadcast, so it helps to get that out of the way quickly.)
As always, ask open-ended questions and avoid leading questions. At the same time, you must be specific enough to obtain brief answers.
Camera shots are usually framed as an MCU or close up. It's important to think about the guest's looking direction, and get an equal number of left-facing and right-facing subjects. These can then be alternated in post-production. Some producers go so far as to get all answers with a particular opinion facing one way, and answers with an opposing opinion facing the other way. Whether or not you think this is effective is up to you — you may feel that it is too contrived.

-Based on my audience research I found that majority of the public found that sexual harassment predominately occurs in urban areas ,but we have decided to portray the protagonist within in working class society in central London rather than a 'ghetto'.To ensure realism in my film I want to stay within the working class margin.

Vox Pops

Hey everyone!

Before starting my production , I wanted to make sure that my idea was valid and would be suitable for a BSR film. One way I did this was by conducting a research from a few random people, asking for their opinion on the theme and subject of my film prospectus.I did this in the form of a vox pop which you can watch below.

The term "vox pop" comes from the Latin phrase vox populi, meaning "voice of the people". The vox pop is a tool used in many forms of media to provide a snapshot of public opinion. Random subjects are asked to give their views on a particular topic and their responses are presented to the viewer/reader as a reflection of popular opinion.
